**Hurricane Milton Update from Lee County Schools**

The School District of Lee County is working to assess damage to buildings and schools following Hurricane Milton. All but one school shelter has closed and will undergo remediation procedures this weekend. Plans for school operations during the week of October 14th will be shared by 5 PM on Saturday, October 12th.

Restoring electricity is a priority, with communications established with LCEC and FPL to ensure power is restored quickly at school sites. The district is also collaborating with local officials to confirm that roads are safe for students and staff.

To reopen schools, several criteria must be met:

- Reliable power supply

- Safe drinking water

- Professional safety assessments of buildings

- Secure windows and roofs

- Functioning air conditioning systems

- Operational fire alarms and intercoms

- Good indoor air quality

- Safe removal or storage of storm debris

- Capability to serve meals to students

Athletic events are still postponed, but the district will communicate any changes should schools meet safety criteria for practices and make-up games.

The District is also reviewing the current Instructional Calendar to determine make-up days for school closures caused by the hurricane. October 14, 2024, is tentatively set as a make-up day for Hurricane Helene. The district is working with the Florida Department of Education to fulfill all educational requirements.

Community members are encouraged to stay safe and reach out to partner agencies for assistance as needed.
