Arizona Increases Highway Patrol After Collision Surge

On March 10, 2025, the Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol began working with the Greenlee County Sheriff's Office and the Graham County Sheriff's Office to provide additional patrols on U.S. 191, U.S. 70, and other nearby highways in southeastern Arizona. The increased patrols follow a rise in complaints about aggressive driving and collisions in the area.

AZDPS Captain Dean Chase stated that troopers will strictly enforce traffic laws, emphasizing maximum enforcement for dangerous or reckless driving. Greenlee County Sheriff Eric Ellison noted that the collisions, including fatal and serious-injury crashes, have deeply affected local communities. Graham County Sheriff P.J. Allred expressed support for the enhanced patrol efforts, welcoming the extra patrol on the highways.

Officials also provided safety tips for motorists, including planning ahead and checking road conditions via az511.gov or traffic apps, passing only when safe and legal, maintaining a safe following distance, staying alert without driving while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, and always wearing a seatbelt.
