Three Steps to Follow When Calling 911

Staff Report / FMlocal.org

When you call 911, there are three essential steps to follow according to Lee County Public Safety.

First, provide your exact location. This is crucial for emergency responders to reach you quickly. If you do not know the exact address, offer nearby cross streets, buildings, or landmarks to help identify your location.

Second, explain exactly what has happened. Whether you are experiencing a medical emergency or have witnessed an accident, giving a clear and concise description of the situation enables dispatchers to send the appropriate help, such as emergency medical services or law enforcement.

Finally, it’s important to stay on the line after you’ve given your information. The telecommunicator may need to provide additional instructions or updates about the situation, including safety measures to take, such as performing CPR if necessary or securing pets. Do not hang up unless you are instructed to do so.

This information aims to assist individuals in effectively utilizing emergency services during urgent situations.
