Low-Cost Tips for Florida Preparedness Month

Staff Report / FMlocal.org

October 2023 marks Florida Preparedness Month, focusing on low-cost and no-cost disaster preparedness tips for residents. The Fort Myers Fire Department encourages residents to keep their vehicles at least halfway full of gas or charged in case of necessary evacuations.

Residents are urged to visit FloridaDisaster.org/Know to check if their homes are in an evacuation zone and to develop a smart evacuation plan. To minimize harm during storms, the public is advised to "pick it up, put it up" to clear the area around their homes of potential debris.

Additional low-cost tips are available at FloridaDisaster.org/PlanPrepare. The message emphasizes that being prepared does not need to be expensive. Residents are encouraged to gradually stock up on items for their disaster supply kits as they shop, and to use pantry staples like non-perishable foods. For water storage, individuals can collect rainwater or purchase affordable containers.

It is recommended that each household maintain a sufficient supply of food and water for at least seven days for all family members and pets.
