**Golf Cart Regulations in Fort Myers – Important Guidelines**
The Fort Myers Police Department has issued a reminder regarding the regulations surrounding the operation of golf carts within the City of Fort Myers.
Golf carts are defined as motor vehicles designed for operation on golf courses for recreational purposes, with a maximum speed not exceeding 20 miles per hour. This regulation applies to modified carts unless they have been fully converted and registered as motor vehicles.
Under current regulations, golf carts are not permitted on roadways or sidewalks within the city, with a few exceptions. These exceptions include:
- Certain gated communities that allow golf carts, marked accordingly.
- Designated golf courses.
- Use by government employees, utility workers, or maintenance workers during official business.
New legislation that became effective on July 1 has changed the age requirements for operating golf carts. Individuals must be at least 18 years old with a valid ID card, 15 years old with a learner's permit, or 16 years old with a valid driver's license to operate a golf cart.
According to the 2023 Florida Drivers License Handbook, golf carts cannot be operated on public roadways unless permitted by specific county or city regulations. Currently, there is no city ordinance in Fort Myers that allows golf carts on public roadways or sidewalks.
Violations of golf cart regulations are enforceable under Florida State Statue 316.212, which governs the operation of golf carts on certain roadways. Citation amounts may vary from $113 to $163, and violators may face points on their driver's licenses. The Fort Myers traffic unit will be actively enforcing these regulations in areas where violations have increased.
