Hurricane Helene Recovery: Document Damage, Seek Assistance

Staff Report / FMlocal.org

Residents affected by Hurricane Helene are urged to begin their recovery process immediately. The first step is to document the damage to homes and personal belongings by taking photographs. It is also recommended to create a list of items that were damaged or lost.

For those who have insurance, it is necessary to file a claim with their insurance company. Individuals without insurance should proceed to the next steps.

To apply for assistance, residents can choose one of three methods:

1. Visit the website DisasterAssistance.gov.

2. Use the FEMA app.

3. Call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362.

When applying for assistance from FEMA, individuals will need to provide several key documents, which include:

- Proof of identification

- An insurance determination letter

- Proof of occupancy or ownership of the affected property

It is important to note that FEMA is unable to provide financial assistance for losses that are already covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters who have uninsured damage or losses are encouraged to reach out to FEMA for assistance.
